How To Make More Money With This Simple Mindset Tip

By Rachael Taylor

I first came across the idea of looking at my mindset when I was becoming a certified health and life coach. Throughout the training we could elect to join group calls of 3 to 4 people, and receive 15 minutes of coaching specific to the problem we were facing.

Not only was it helpful to be coached, but it was also helpful to listen to our leader teach the other students and hear them walk themselves through their own problem to a solution.

There was a question that was always asked, “What does that mean for you?” The more it was asked, the more I became interested in what exactly that meant.

At first glance it seems like an opinion question, and in one sense I believe it is, but when you look at a little longer it becomes apparent that what is truly being asked is “What is the story your mindset has around what you’re going through?”

In other words, what is your mind telling you to be true about the problem you’re dealing with right now?

Is it solvable? Inevitable? Unavoidable? Permanent? Temporary? A stepping stone?

When you can identify how your mind reacts to your biggest problems in life, you can start to take charge and give yourself the power to change them. Your money is no exception to this rule.

My mind seemed very happy to apply what I was learning in coaching school to every area of my life - health, relationships, boundaries, time management - except in my business and finances.

I had a lot of resistance around being seen, offering my help and services and bringing in more income than I “needed” – aka more money than my bills. Does this sound like you?

After much digging, I realized that I had a struggle mindset and it kept reverting back to an old story that making money came from working hard at a job that burned you out, frustrated you and kept you on the edge of “just enough to get by”. Not only did I experience this firsthand in my first few jobs, but I watched many family members live out this belief (as well as other friends and people in general).

I know I’m not alone. This story that business and success requires suffering is not new under the sun, it’s been around for a while and many of us share this underlying belief.

That’s not to say that running and sustaining a profitable business does not require work, thought and consistent action (it does). However, it is possible to set up and run your business with a model that plays to your strengths and doesn’t require you to burn out in order to reach your desired level of success.

You can find your path to more money and a sustainable business, when you understand where your mindset is coming from in the first place.

It’s much easier to do what you need to do in order to grow your business without your mindset being a negative chatter box that sabotages you at every turn. This story of “the need to struggle and suffer” was incredibly influential in the early days of my business and it kept me in a state of financial scarcity, month after month.

It continued to drive and influence my actions by pushing me into strategies and tactics that weren’t my cup of tea and actively drained my energy, passion and drive. At any point when I did spend time in my zone of genius – using my strengths to my advantage – I would feel great afterward, but then feel huge resistance the next time I went to do the same thing.

This one step forward, two steps back pattern continued until I found this story. Remember, all transformational work and change begins with awareness, builds into a desire a change and then turns into action seeking out a solution that is applied to our lives.

I kept running into this problem because my mind believed this story of struggle. It was holding it to be safe and true in my life. Whenever my actions directly contradicted that, a red flare went up in my mind and it triggered sabotaging actions, procrastination and you guessed it, resistance to put a stop to what I was doing.

However, the dream I had to help people master their mindset and eliminate their fears so they can make more money in their business, would not go away. Every morning I woke up with a burning desire and passion to make it work, because I knew that I was meant to grow and expand so I could help more people than I already was. I still go to bed and wake up with this dream - it’s a part of what drives me.

Do you ever feel that way about your business?

No matter how frustrated or overwhelmed you are, the dream and vision you have for your life and business keeps nagging at you, day in and day out? Is the reminder something you enjoy or does it feel discouraging? If you feel discouraged, I want to remind you that everything starts somewhere. It’s okay to not be where you want to be - just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Your future is not set in stone.

An oak tree that lives hundreds of years starts with an acorn smaller than a human fist. Don’t hate your beginnings, enjoy them. You won’t stay there forever, but you will have to get your mindset on board with where you want to go.

You may have a dream that is new for your family, it’s something that has never been done so it feels scary and your mindset is trying to protect you from the unknown. Thank it for trying to help you and then nicely ask it to sit back down, because you’ve got a plan and you’re ready to take action on it.

Where do you go from here?

It will take practice to overcome procrastination and resistance and to change negative generational thoughts when it comes to money, success how much you’re allowed to have and how you made it happen, but I promise you that it’s worth it.

All you have to do is get started and a little further down I’ll show you exactly how to do just that.

As with all things, practice does make it easier. Think about when you first started to ride a bike, drive a car or your first sports practice. You didn’t start out at an Olympic level and you probably had such a tight grip on the steering wheel that your hands were sore and your neck was stiff. But it got easier didn’t it? Your natural talents showed through, your confidence grew and now the things that once required specific thought and preparation are second nature to you.

The same is true for mastering your mindset so you can make more money.

By identifying the stories your mindset has around the problems you’re facing in your business, you can actively change them to no longer cause you problems. Go back to the beginning - what is your mind telling you to be true about the problem you’re dealing with right now?

Is it solvable? Inevitable? Unavoidable? Permanent? Temporary? A stepping stone?

It will only a few minutes to figure out, usually the first thing that pops into your mind is your answer. If your mind is blank, don’t worry about it. Sometimes, it takes a few days for the answer to surface because it needs to weave through some clutter.

Once you know what the first response is, ask yourself “What do I want to believe instead?” then write it down and put it somewhere you can read it out loud for the next 30 days (at least).

The easiest way is to simply flip around the answer your mind gives you and reinforce your desired state, speaking it as if it’s already true.

If your mind was telling you:

“I’ll never have enough money, trying to find clients is too hard and I feel completely overwhelmed with everything I need to do.”

Switch it around to:

“Money flows to me easily and in abundance, the right clients are on their way, I have complete confidence in my talents and abilities to accomplish everything my business needs from me.”

It may sound silly at first, and you might not believe it to be true, but I want you to say it anyway. The first step in making more money is understanding your mindset around it, and then committing to actively change it.

You may not always feel like you’re far enough along, but if you can master your mindset to keep removing these negative beliefs and patterns, you will be able to keep your head in the game and keep applying yourself to the marketing, promotion and client conversion that your business needs to thrive.
